[ARCHIVED] State ends 2010 with nearly 10,000 more jobs

(LINCOLN JOURNAL STAR) Helped by year-end surges in retail and manufacturing employment, Nebraska ended 2010 with nearly 10,000 more jobs than it had at the end of 2009.

According to data released Tuesday by the Nebraska Department of Labor, there were 9,989 more jobs at the end of December than there were a year earlier.

“Trade, transportation and utilities, and manufacturing grew over the month in large part because of steep rises in retail employment,” said Labor Commissioner Catherine Lang. “Both of these increases are the largest for the month of December over the past decade and indicate strengthening in those sectors of the state’s economy.”

Over the full year, the biggest gainer in employment was professional and business services, which gained more than 5,000 jobs from December 2009 to December 2010.

In all, seven of the 10 employment categories gained jobs in 2010
